Bajegoli, Udupi dist, Karnataka
U.B.M.C Higher Primary School

About School

The school has been in existence since the 1940s and serves poor kids from surrounding villages. The children are from families of agricultural workers and labourers, barely able to survive on meagre wages. The school is in dire need of a few strong and safe classrooms, the old building having seen its days. The drinking water facility and toilets are totally destroyed and unhygienic.

The Domino Effect

This school is the first ever project done by OSAAT. It actually started as a modest effort by a few Silicon Valley engineers, to raise funds and donate to the school. However, the ground reality – red tape, corruption, vested interests interfering – made them think further. Their vision resulted in the birth of OSAAT as a non-profit organization in 2003. After OSAAT adopted the school, the local community in Bajegoli got excited, and brought in building materials, furniture and other equipment. Today, the school is standing tall, proud, and keeping its promise to the poor kids it is serving!

Before OSAAT Intervention

  • The number of rooms was totally inadequate for the number of classes that were being taught.
  • A tree outside the school building served as a classroom where kids sat exposed to the elements of nature – sweltering heat, rain, cold. One classroom had been divided into four rooms using old, cloth partitions.
  • The asbestos roof had huge, gaping holes that had been patched without much success. The only toilet block there was completely collapsed and unusable.

After OSAAT Intervention

  • The school was rebuilt with a new, stronger roof and walls, three bright and airy classrooms, a new kitchen and break-room, a staff-room, and restrooms.
  • Clean drinking water is also available to all, with a new water tank.
  • Modest furniture such as benches and tables have been provided in each classroom, along with new chalkboards, ceiling fans and lighting.
