Kottalagi, Karnataka
Sri Basavaarudha Primary  & Secondary School

About School

Kottalagi is a small village close to the Maharashtra border. It is in Belagavi district, but geographically farthest away from Belagavi. Sri Basavaarudha Primary school is run by Basavarudha matha. There are a couple of government schools nearby, but residents prefer sending children to this school, as the teachers are of high quality. The residents of this village are mainly agricultural laborers and migrant families in search of work. Some of the students from this school have gone on to crack the entrance exams of prestigious government residential schools like Navodaya school, Morarji Desai school and Sainik school, Bijapur. The strength of the school is 320 students. Currently they have 6 classrooms.

The Domino Effect

People’s Organisation for Wasteland and Environment Regeneration (POWER), Bijapur, used the expertise of their volunteers in overseeing the construction from start to finish.

Inspired by the brand new school structure, local charities are stepping into help procure the benches and desks for the classrooms.

Before OSAAT Intervention

  • The recent rains have heavily damaged the roofs of the existing classrooms.
  • The committee has pooled in INR 5 lac and have started with the 1st classroom.
  • The Headmaster has rented few rooms nearby to conduct classes.
  • The structural strength is good enough for them to construct 2 more floors above this room.
  • They are now building the foundation for the 2nd room. The construction is adhoc, they build as and when they have funds.

After OSAAT Intervention

  • The construction of the school is complete and has been completely transformed from an unsafe, crumbling, inadequate structure, to an impressive school building, with 7 brand new classrooms and a toilet block.
  • The old building will soon be a distant memory in the minds of the local community that was desperately seeking help after years of neglect by authorities on both sides of its location, being on the border of Karnataka and Maharashtra.
  • The Kottalagi school project was a joint collaboration between OSAAT, and Shri Basavarudha Shikshana Samsthe, the school committee, with People’s Organization for Wasteland and Environment Regeneration (POWER), Vijayapura, another charitable organization, as the facilitator. The road to success took nearly 18 months of teamwork, dedication, and meticulous attention to every detail. In the end, the school stands tall and proud, to the sheer delight of 320 children enrolled in nursery to 7th grade today.
