Kottalagi is a small village close to the Maharashtra border. It is in Belagavi district, but geographically farthest away from Belagavi. Sri Basavaarudha Primary school is run by Basavarudha matha. There are a couple of government schools nearby, but residents prefer sending children to this school, as the teachers are of high quality. The residents of this village are mainly agricultural laborers and migrant families in search of work. Some of the students from this school have gone on to crack the entrance exams of prestigious government residential schools like Navodaya school, Morarji Desai school and Sainik school, Bijapur. The strength of the school is 320 students. Currently they have 6 classrooms.
The Domino Effect
People’s Organisation for Wasteland and Environment Regeneration (POWER), Bijapur, used the expertise of their volunteers in overseeing the construction from start to finish.
Inspired by the brand new school structure, local charities are stepping into help procure the benches and desks for the classrooms.
