The school serves 110 high school students from 9 surrounding hamlets within a 4-6 km radius. Most of them walk to school and the attendance is affected as a result, particularly in the rainy season. Some construction work has been started for 2 new rooms and a few donors have contributed some building materials (bricks, etc.). Due to shortage of funds, the rooms have been fitted with asbestos sheets for roofing. Some usable portions of the old building are being used to conduct the 8th grade class, for cooking and serving mid-day meals.
The Domino Effect
As a pre-condition to getting a new room, Government of Karnataka had agreed to provide computers. The school is now able to procure them. A few generous donors – Manjunath, an ex-student and some Cisco employees among them (Cisco Kannada Sangha lead by Yogesh Devaraj, an OSAAT supporter) – have donated books, shelves and other library equipment.
The school took a loan and purchased a 17-seater school bus. No money is being charged for student pickup/drop-off. Some of the loan amount has been paid off using contributions from ex-students. It is inspiring & moving to learn that Mr. Onkarappa, school’s head master who is about to retire, has donated Rs. 50,000/- to the school-fund. The staff is currently contributing some amount from their monthly salary to repay the loan amount.
