Zilla Parishad High School, Peddatumbalam
This village with a population of about 9,000 with literacy rate of about 28.4% is located in Kurnool district, which is one of the most backward districts of Andhra Pradesh. Because of low literacy rate and because of large percentage of minority population, child marriages are more common and families hesitate to send girls to the schools.
School has 15 class sections but has only 12 classrooms. Some sections have 70-students, even though the AP Government rule is to have only 40-students per class. Due to space constraints, students attend classes outside in the open under the trees and corridors. Some of the classrooms are currently accommodating two sections in the same room due to lack of space.
Peddatumbalam ZPHS needs a rehaul of its infrastructure due to the unavailability of classrooms for all the students. Currently, the school is making temporary arrangements for conducting regular classes which are neither safe nor practical. They have asked for 10 additional classrooms, science lab, computer lab, and kitchen.
OSAAT procured all necessary documentation related to the land and ownership and later obtained the necessary ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the education department to start the construction. The contractor was identified for the project and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the contractor and the school’s SDMC. The groundbreaking ceremony happened on 7-Dec-2019. The construction is expected to be completed in about 4 months.
