Mahadev Vidyalaya, Ravalgundewadi, Jath, Sangli, Maharastra, India

  • STATUS: Dressed up and ready for kids since 2012
  • LOCATION: Jath Taluk, Sangli district, Maharashtra, India
  • NO. OF STUDENTS: 200+
  • GRADES: 8-10
  • OSAAT CONTRIBUTION: completion of 8 classrooms (which had been left incomplete), newly constructed toilets (separate for girls and boys), and a Staff room

The School is located in the remote village of Raval Gundevadi in Jath Taluk, Sangli district in Maharashtra. It is situated on the border between Karnataka and Maharashtra. The School serves more than 200 children from poor families of agricultural labourers. 6 classes are taught in both Kannada (3) and Marathi (3).

Due to lack of proper facilities to accommodate the students, the 6 classes were being conducted all over the village – 2 classes next to the Panchayat office, 2 classes in a local temple, 1 class next to a house and 1 class in a community hall. Without any help forthcoming from the Government, the villagers decided to build a school, collected funds and started the construction. Halfway through, they ran out of money and the construction stopped. They constructed the foundation and walls for 4 rooms, and 1 room without a roof.

The school now has 8 fully constructed, fully functional classrooms, separate, newly constructed toilets for girls and boys, and a newly constructed Staff room.

The Domino Effect

OSAAT’s main motivation to take this project on was that the village is considered a model in the area, having installed sanitation facilities in every house. There has never been an election since 1962 for civic bodies. People have always chosen their leaders unanimously. When OSAAT offered a helping hand, the villagers and the Panchayat showed an amazing strength of unity and commitment towards the school. POWER (People’s Organization for Wasteland and Environment Regeneration), a Bijapur based non-profit organization joined hands with OSAAT and oversaw the fund transfer and construction.

Call For Action

We are proud to have started this journey. We are grateful and optimistic that people will want to continue this domino effect, so we can do more. Want to be a domino for this or any of our other projects
