Muttagi Karnataka
Jai Gurudev Primary Residential School

About the School

The school houses 50 children who have either been rescued from child labor or abandoned by agricultural laborers and migrant workers who have left the area in search of jobs. The school also serves another 50 poor children from villages within a 3-5 KM radius. The school is surviving on meagre aid from the State, barely enough to cover the cost of food, clothing and basic necessities of the children it houses.

The Domino Effect

Rotary club of Bijapur, and People’s Organisation for Wasteland and Environment Regeneration (POWER), Bijapur, another local Non-Profit organization, joined hands with OSAAT to execute this project. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with OSAAT, and diligently oversaw the construction. The project was completed on time and within budget. Both organizations have continued to support the school to date, in many ways.

OSAAT Contribution: Repair of the flood hit school building, new flooring and rebuilding of the kitchen

We are proud to start this journey. We are grateful and optimistic that people will want to continue this domino effect, so we can do more.

Before OSAAT Intervention

  • The building that served as both a shelter and school was constructed out of concrete blocks and thatched roof.
  • The roof had been patched with plastic sheets to cover huge, gaping holes, rendering the structure unable to withstand the rainy season
  • Mold, standing water, crumbling walls and the unsafe roof posed a constant danger to the children.

After OSAAT Intervention

  • The flood hit school building has a new, sturdy roof that has made it possible for the building to withstand the rainy season.
  • The building also has brand new flooring and a new kitchen.
  • No more standing water or mold posing a danger to the health of the kids.
