Government Higher Primary School, Cholenahalli, Mysore, Karnataka, India

  • STATUS: Dressed up and ready for kids!
  • LOCATION: Cholenahalli, Bilikere hobli, Hunsur Taluk, Karnataka, India
  • NO. OF STUDENTS: 120
  • GRADES: Kindergarten & grades 1-7
  • OSAAT CONTRIBUTION: 4 newly constructed classrooms, 1 computer room/library, 1 staff room and 2 toilet blocks

The school serves children from families of laborers working in the local agricultural fields. The annual income of majority of the parents is an average Rs. 7000 per year. There are no other schools in the area that these families can afford.

The school building was completely ruined. Out of 4 classrooms, 3 had leaky roof, ready to collapse any day. During the first site visit in May 2015, OSAAT volunteers had reported that the 3 classrooms in the old building were unusable and the school was left with just one usable room that had been newly built. By the second site visit in October 2015, one of the walls in a ruined classroom had collapsed completely and the Government demolished the old building completely. A anganwadi room exists to cater to Kindergarten kids.

The school has 4 newly constructed classrooms, 1 computer room/library, 1 staff room and 2 toilet blocks. The kids are no longer in danger of attending classes in the old, dilapidated building. The daunting challenges that the school had to face with just one usable classroom had practically brought the school to a screeching halt. The school’s day-to-day functioning have now resumed with renewed vigor and excitement, as of May 2, 2016.

The Domino Effect

Thanks to a generous grant of $20,000 from SanDisk Corporation, a major portion of the reconstruction cost was taken care of. OSAAT funded the remaining amount. SanDisk Corporation is very impressed with OSAAT’s work and has pledged continued support for OSAAT. Rotary Club, Mysore, partnered with us on this project and continues to be a valuable partner for other OSAAT projects in the pipeline.

Call For Action

We are proud to have started this journey. We are grateful and optimistic that people will want to continue this domino effect, so we can do more. Want to be a domino for this or any of our other projects
